โ Therapist Tea: You Might Not Be Tired for the Reason You Think
Lately, I've been hearing the same thing from women over and over in my therapy office:
"I'm exhausted."
Not sleepy.
Not "I need a nap."
Exhausted.
The kind of tired that doesn't go away after a good night's sleep.
The kind of tired where you're irritated by things that normally wouldn't bother you.
The kind of tired where you find yourself snapping at the people you love and then feeling guilty afterward.
And if you're anything like the women I work with, you've probably asked yourself:
- Why am I so tired all the time?
- Why am I always in such a bad mood?
- Why do I feel guilty?
- Why do I feel like I have to do everything myself?
As a therapist, I've noticed something interesting.
Many women assume they're exhausted because they're doing too much.
But sometimes that's not the whole story.
Sometimes they're exhausted because they're carrying too much.
Carrying responsibilities.
Carrying guilt.
Carrying everyone else's feelings.
Carrying the pressure to keep everything running smoothly.
And after a while, that gets heavy.
So before you keep blaming yourself, I want you to pause and ask:
What am I carrying that was never mine to carry in the first place?
Because sometimes the problem isn't that you're failing.
Sometimes the problem is that you've been carrying too much for too long.
